This small inner-city suburb is on the southern edge of the Sydney central business district. Chippendale is located between Broadway to the north and Cleveland Street to the south, Sydney Central railway station to the east and the University of Sydney to the west.
Chippendale is a bustling area known for its converted warehouses and vibrant creative scene. Picnics abound on Chippendale Green - as do dogs, all nestled near the shops and eateries of Central Park Mall. Contemporary galleries cluster around Abercrombie Street, and Kensington Street has cafes and Spice Alley which serves a hawker-style Asian food experience. The programme at the Seymour Centre encompasses experimental dance, stand-up comedy, Shakespeare, and student productions.
There are more than a dozen galleries featured in the small neighbourhood (including White Rabbit Gallery, MOP Projects, and Pine Street Creative Arts Centre). The historic Regent Street railway station, 'Mortuary Station' is located on the eastern side of the suburb adjacent to Central train station.
Chippendale is the setting for the 168-year-old Carlton & United brewery which closed in December 2006. The brewery site was redeveloped as Central Park which features a hanging gardens architecture, shopping centre and commercial and residential space. Aspects of heritage buildings have been retained and a new park, Chippendale Green was created.
Schools in the area include Darlington Public School and Chippendale Child Care Centre. The University of Notre Dame Australia sits along the northern border, The University of Technology is opposite Parramatta Road and the University of Sydney have their main campus nearby.
